Neck iron from an excavation. This strongly corroded item has been found
in an excavation near Burriana.
Using only the bolt as suggested in the display for locking the device is not functional.
But an elongated ring to be used to secure the two halfes is
also on display right next to it.
It is a pity that there is no year given with the exhibits.
Such restrains were probably manufactured and used with little
desing changes over the centuries.
Combining the bolt with the neck iron does not really make sense,
it probably was part of a bilbo.
At the end of the bolt is an elongated hole, presumably a flat ring
could be passed through it and then hammered shut.

U-shaped shackle, according to size being part of a bilbo leg iron. One remarks the different size of the two openings for passing the securing bolt. A bolt of matching size is not on display.
Shackles dating from roman times, found during excavations in the Rhone valley in southern France. Judging from the size one would assume that these have been used as fetters. It is interesting to note that one of the pairs uses a puzzle mechanism and also the lock itself is composed of three separate part which have to be put together.
