Selbst gemacht - Do-it-yourself

Die Schellen mit Kapselschloß faszinieren mich schon seit einiger Zeit. Ein exakter Nachbau ist sicher mit einigem Aufwand verbunden, aber eine vereinfachte funktionsfähige Variante erschien mir auch mit einfachen Mitteln realisierbar.
Shackles using a cup lock have intrigued me since quite some time. Although it probably takes some effort to manufacture an exact copy I considered that a simplified but still functional version should be feasible using simple items.

Im Baumarkt fand ich zufälligerweise ein Scharnier und ein Kettenglied, das sich genau darüberstreifen läßt. In a DIY market I stumbled over a hinge and a chain link which just fits the hinge.

Nach ein paar Stunden Arbeit in der Werkstatt ergab sich das folgende Meisterwerk. Es sollte angemerkt werden, daß einige Werkzeuge noch auf der Wunschliste stehen, und daß der Einsatz der Bohrmaschine manchmal doch sehr freihändig war. Ohne die Verwendung des Schraubstocks wäre es nicht gegangen.
After a few hours work the following masterpiece was proudly achieved. It should be well noted that still some tools are on my wish list for the workshop, and that the use of the power drill was quite free-handed at times. The availability of a vice proved to be essential.

Die Verarbeitung ist nicht optimal, aber es ging hier im ersten Muster um das Prinzip. Die Schelle selbst ist mit einer Lage Isolierband umwickelt, um kleine Unebenheiten im Metall abzudecken.

The finish could be better, but for this first try it was a question of proving the principle how the think works. Insulation tape is wrapped around the shackle to cover some rough parts of the metal.

Links ist das Kettenglied über die Laschen geschoben, und rechts ist die Kette durchgefädelt und verflochten. Damit läßt sich das Kettenglied nicht mehr abnehmen. The left photo shows the shackle secured close with the link, on the right photo the chain is threaded through the flaps and woven together. Thus the chain link cannot be slipped off.

Das Material des Scharniers ist mit zwei Millimetern etwas dünn und kann mit viel Kraft etwas verbogen werden. Dies ist aber nur ein Problem, solange die Schelle nicht verschlossen ist. Die Schelle ist erstaunlich bequem im Tragekomfort, nicht zuletzt wegen der genauen Anpassung.

Being only two millimetres thick the hinge can be bent somewhat when using considerable force, but this only is a problem as long as the shackle is not shut. Wearing comfort is surprisingly high. In this respect it pays off to have carefully gone for a good fit when bending into form.
