das Grafenschloß Castle of the Counts

Das Grafenschloß wurde im zwölften Jahrhundert erbaut und am Anfang des 20. Jahrhunders grundlegend restauriert. In einem der Museumssäle des Museums findet sich das "Gerechtsmuseum" - Museum der Gerichtsgegenstände - welches unter anderem historische Fesseln zeigt. Die ursprüngliche Sammlung mit Zwangs- und Foltergegenständen wird durch Objekte aus dem "Raspelhaus" und der Irrenanstalt ergänzt.

The Castle of the Counts has been erected in the twelfth century and profoundly restaurated at the beginning of the 20th century. One of the exhibition halls houses the "Gerechtsmuseum" - Museum of Judicial Objects - that shows historic restraints as part of the collection. The original collection containing instruments of restraint and torture is complemented by objects from the Gent Rasp house and from the lunatic asylum.

Diese Handfessel hat zum einen einen Verschlußring zum Überschieben, welches mit einem Schraubverschluß gesichert wird, und dann zusätzlich fluchtende Bohrungen, in welche zum Beispiel ein Vorhängeschloß zur zusätzlichen Sicherung eingehängt werden könnte.

An diesen Fußfesseln kann man die Schraubenköpfe sehen und versteht somit, wie diese Fesseln verschlossen wurden.

One can see the screw-head on these shackles and thus can understand how these were locked.

Fesselbehang aus psychiatrischer Anwendung.
Die Handgelenke stecken in Handeisen, welche durch Gelenke in etwa kardanisch am Ring befestigt sind und dadurch nur um zwei Drehachsen beweglich sind. Der Ring kann durchaus nur lose um den Bach gelegt sein. Um ihn gegen Herunterfallen zu sichern, ist er mit Ketten an einer Schulterauflage aufgehängt. Diese Auflage oder Halsreif selbst ist wiederum zu eng, als daß man sie über den Kopf abstreifen könnte.

The wrists are being held in in wrist irons attached through hinges to the wrist ring. There are only two degrees of rotation possible. The ring itself need not sit tightly around the waist, chains connecting it to a shoulder rest keep it from falling down. This shoulder rest or neck ring in turn is too narrow to be slipped over the head.
