Prangereisen - Pillory Iron

Eine Prangerfessel. Wahrscheinlich wurden die Arme durch die Reifen gesteckt und danach das Halseisen verschlossen. Somit war man gezwungen, die Arme angehoben zu halten. Unterhalb von Brusthöhe macht die Anordnung, so wie sie im Museum zusammengebaut ist, weniger Sinn. Ich vermute, daß das Scharnier falschherum zusammengesetzt ist. Der Sinn der nach vorne zum Körper hin zeigenden Kettenbefestigung will sich mir einfach nicht erschließen. Der Schlitz im unteren Flacheisen (dort ist aktuell das Vorhängeschloß eingehängt) macht dann Sinn, wenn er zur Befestigung eines Bauchreifes diente, um das Oberteil zu versteifen. Ohne die Armringe könnte das Oberteil vielleicht folgende Form gehabt haben. Allerdings ist der Abstand von Schlitz zu Hals doch recht weit, sodaß er eher auf Höhe der Oberschenkel als auf Taillenhöhe liegt. Nachdem ich nun doch eine Weile nachgedacht habe, muß ich zugeben, daß ich mir immer noch nicht schlüssig bin, wie diese Fessel nun ursprünglich genau ausgesehen hat. Detailansicht des Oberteils.

Pillory restraint. One probably had to pass the arms through the loops before the neck iron was locked, thus forcing the arms into a raised position. As the assembly is on display the parts below breast height do not make much sense. My educated guess is that the hinge is assembled the wrong way round. I do not see the purpose of the chain attachment pointing forward towards the body. However, the slit in the lower flat iron (where the padlock is currently attached to) might have served to attach a waist ring to stiffen the contraption. Minus the arm rings this combination may be close to the possible shape. But the distance from the slit to the shoulders is quite long so the slit is more likely to be at the height of the thighs than at waist height. After thinking about this restraint for quite a while now I have to admit that I still have not come to a conclusion on how this contraption really looked like originally.
